                              <p class="paragraph" id="d8e7200">Das Spanning-Tree-Protokoll (STP) wurde von <span id="d8e7202" class="indexItem">Radia
                                    								Perlman</span> entwickelt und in der damaligen LAN-Bridge 100
                                 							von DEC implementiert. Das IEEE veröffentlichte seine Version erstmals
                                 							Mitte der 1980er Jahre im Standard 802.1d. Da die Entwicklung dieses
                                 							Protokolls nunmehr über zwei Jahrzehnte zurückliegt, entspricht es nicht
                                 							mehr den aktuellen Anforderungen. Daher wurde es von dem IEEE
                                 							weiterentwickelt und im Jahre 2001 durch das
                                 							Rapid-Spanning-Tree-Protokoll (IEEE 802.1w) ersetzt. Dabei baut der neue
                                 							Standard auf vielen vorhandenen Verfahren seines Vorgängers auf. Einer
                                 							der Hauptnachteile des Spanning-Tree-Protokolls nach 802.1d war das
                                 							passive Verarbeiten der BPDU-Pakete. Parallel dazu mussten als Schutz
                                 							gegen Bridging-Loops hohe Zeitintervalle bei Topologieänderungen
                                 							berücksichtigt werden, bevor Datenframes auf einen Port der Bridge
                                 							weitergeleitet wurden.
